Kathryn Stoltzfus- IDC Staff Instructor

Kathryn Stoltzfus- IDC Staff Instructor

I started my underwater adventures in Australia learning to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. My first day on the bottom of the pool I knew this was where I was supposed to be. For many years after this I just did a few resort dives, but in 2016 I was re-introduced back into the sport.
Getting back into the water I needed a refresher course and new equipment. I found Blue Crew Divers, and it was like riding a bike.
After a Caribbean trip I knew I wanted additional training, so I signed up for dive education and ended up in Dutch Springs (now Lake Hydra). Fresh water diving was strange, as I had only ever been in the ocean, while initially it seemed like a necessary but uncommon task, I have come to love fresh water diving and the differences it brings.  Since returning to the sport I have continued my dive education both for myself and to be able to share it with new divers. I became a dive instructor in 2019 and my current role as IDC Staff Instructor has me helping to train new dive instructors and divemasters as well.

More recently my personal dive education has me exploring the discipline of technical diving, pushing the boundaries of depth and time underwater and figuring out how to wear more equipment on your body.
When asked “what is your favorite dive?” - I have the hardest time answering - for me it really is the next dive I am going to do. I know that when I get out the water I am going to have the biggest smile on my face as the ocean is truly amazing.
Bucket list dives for me still include Iceland, South Africa, Bikini Atoll, Cocos Island to name a few, but I am just happy to be under the water.
That moment when you are in the pool, or at the end of open water certification, teaching new students and you see it all come together for a new diver - that moment is magic! That makes it great.
When I am not diving I work as a veterinarian, and in my free time I can be found skiing, hiking, biking and working on learning Spanish.
