Rick Smethers - IDC Staff Instructor
Rick’s passion for the underwater world began in childhood, inspired by Sea Hunt and the adventures of Jacques Cousteau. A family snorkeling trip to Mexico later transformed that fascination into action; observing from the surface was no longer enough. Rick earned his scuba certification soon after and has been exploring & teaching beneath the surface ever since.
Fueled by a deep commitment to the diving community, Rick expanded his training to become a certified Public Safety Diver and Instructor. He currently serves as Dive Operations Captain with Station 77 Dive Rescue Unit in Chester County, PA, where he leads underwater safety and rescue missions.
Beyond public safety diving, Rick contributes his expertise as a Dive Technician at Adventure Aquarium, performing underwater maintenance and participating in live diving shows that showcase advanced underwater communication systems.
As an IDC Staff Instructor, Rick finds great fulfillment in mentoring new divers and helping them build confidence and respect for the underwater environment. His journey—from childhood wonder to professional instructor and then to rescue diver—reflects his lifelong dedication to the exploration, safety and stewardship of the aquatic world.
